Opportunity

We are seeking a Senior Research Lead, Carbon Removal to join our Science & Innovation (S&I) team as a senior individual contributor. You will bring deep technical fluency in carbon removal, strong systems thinking, and leadership across complex, crossfunctional projects. Your work will help drive highaccountability carbon removal and communicate technical guidance to policymakers, federal agencies, and the broader public.

Responsibilities

  • Lead crossfunctional projects requiring scientific depth, strategic synthesis, and coordination across teams. First 6 months focus on financial mechanisms for carbon removal.
  • Build and steward coalitions with technical experts, researchers, industry partners, community stakeholders, and standards bodies.
  • Translate highly technical concepts into clear, compelling guidance for nontechnical audiences, including policymakers and external partners.
  • Analyze systemlevel driverspolicy, markets, economics, technology maturitythat shape the trajectory of carbon removal.
  • Dissect complex CDR concepts, technologies, and scientific claims to surface risks, opportunities, and policy implications.
  • Serve as a senior technical voice, providing leadership, clarity, and structure amid ambiguity.
  • Share critical scientific developments and field intelligence across Carbon180 to strengthen organizationwide decisionmaking.
  • Support the development and advocacy of best practices for a just, equitable, and highly accountable carbon removal industry.
  • Collaborate with the communications team on thoughtleadership outputsblogs, media engagement, white papers, and other products.
  • Represent Carbon180's technical perspective in external engagements, working groups, and stakeholder convenings.

Qualifications

  • 510 years of scientific or technical experience, with exposure to carbon removal or related fields (e.g., carbon management, energy systems, materials science).
  • Multidisciplinary mindset and ability to learn quickly across a wide range of technical topics.
  • Track record of rigorous, highquality work in environments that value depth, clarity, and thoughtful analysis.
  • Prior experience in science policy or strong belief that government can contribute to solving largescale societal problems like climate change.
  • Demonstrated ability to navigate complexity, manage multiple projects, and thrive in dynamic, ambiguous environments.
  • Excellent communication skillsable to translate complex scientific ideas into clear, compelling narratives for diverse audiences.
  • High impact orientation, low ego, and alignment with Carbon180s core values of justice, equity, and accountability.
