About the Employer Welcome to the Whittier City School District, a Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade school district with eight elementary schools, two middle schools, one K-8 school, and two virtual learning academies. We serve approximately 6,300 students who matriculate into the Whittier Union High School District. Job Description / Essential Elements: ACCOUNTING TECHNICIAN Under general supervision of the Director of Fiscal Services, to perform specialized accounting, financial and statistical record keeping and processing, work of above average difficulty in an automated environment; to perform assigned administrative support and clerical duties pertinent to the assigned functions and department; and to perform related work as required.

BUDGET - Prepare necessary financial and statistical reports from records maintained
- Set up account numbers, create and maintain files
- Perform transfers and revisions
- Develop budgetary and other projections and estimates of expenditures, personnel cost, cash flow, income, and related data using trends and formulae
- Compose routine correspondence
- Maintain and monitor position control system
- Receive and process other forms and documents; verify account codes and availability of funds, screen for compliance, with approved budget, accounting standards, and program guidelines
- Compile and file financial reports and claims for review and approval
ACCOUNTING Reconcile program records, reimbursable accounts, book deposits, invoice statements, and bank account, collect and verify documents to maintain and reconcile records

GENERAL Enter data in computer terminal/microcomputer, create spreadsheets and databases; use standard and specialized software for correspondence, board agenda materials, reports, lists, contracts, etc.
- Understand, interpret and explain accounting-related procedures, program guidelines, mandates, and options to staff, students, and parents; research and resolve problems
- Enter data in computer terminal/microcomputer, create spreadsheets and databases; use standard and specialized software, keyboard correspondence, board agenda materials, reports, lists contracts, calendars, and other materials
- Answer telephone, take messages and transfer calls; answer a variety of questions regarding accounting matters.
- Perform a wide range of administrative support and clerical duties related to assigned accounting functions and department
Communicate in person and by telephone with site staff, students, facilities, public, and vendors, interact with other departments - Prepare information for adults, assist in scheduling and arranging insurance representative site inspections
- Operate standard office equipment such as photocopies, FAX, typewriters, microcomputers, computer terminal, and printer.

QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of:
Methods, practices, and terminology used in financial and statistical record keeping.
Ability to:
- Perform specialized account clerical record keeping of above average difficulty
- Post data and make arithmetic calculations with speed and accuracy
- Create spreadsheets on Excel
- Learn pertinent procedures and apply them without constant supervision
- Extract and summarize date for reports
- Compare numbers and detect errors
- Keep accurate records
- Operate quickly and accurately a 10 key calculator by touch method
- Operate a computer terminal
- Operate a typewriter keyboard with accuracy
- Understand and carry out oral and written instructions
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the
required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the
required knowledge and skill would be:
Experience: Three years of increasing responsibility in fiscal record management and reporting involving manual and computer-assisted processes.
Education: High school graduation or equivalent, supplemented by college level coursework or training in accounting, bookkeeping, and business practices and procedures.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical
aspects that this position classification must perform in carrying out essential job functions.
Persons performing service in this position classification will exert 10 to 20 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
This type of work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods.
Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate business related equipment, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job.
